Compliance & Testing

COMPLIANCE IS NOT OPTIONAL. NEITHER IS OUR SUPPORT WITH IT.

International furniture markets have increasingly rigorous import compliance requirements — and the consequences of getting them wrong are significant: product held at customs, goods returned or destroyed, reputational damage with retail partners, and potential regulatory penalties.

Living Ikon supports buyers with compliance from the earliest stage of product development — not as a last-minute checklist, but as an integrated part of how we specify, produce, and document every order.

WHAT COMPLIANCE COVERS
Compliance requirements vary by market, product type, and material. We work across the full range of requirements relevant to our export markets:

CHEMICAL COMPLIANCE
Restrictions on formaldehyde emissions, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), heavy metals, and other restricted substances in timber, coatings, finishes, and composite materials.

Key standards we work to:

  • CARB (California Air Resources Board) Phase 2 — formaldehyde emission limits for composite wood products; increasingly required by US retailers
  • TSCA Title VI — US federal standard aligned with CARB Phase 2
  • REACH (EU) — restriction of hazardous substances; relevant for European market product
  • EN 71-3 (toy safety heavy metals) — for children’s furniture
  • Low-VOC and zero-VOC finish specifications for markets with indoor air quality requirements

STRUCTURAL & SAFETY COMPLIANCE
Testing to confirm that furniture meets the load, stability, and durability standards required by the importing market.

Key standards we work to:

  • AS/NZS standards (Australian/New Zealand furniture safety and performance requirements)
  • EN 1730 / EN 527 / EN 581 and related European furniture standards
  • ASTM standards for the North American market
  • Flammability requirements (where applicable to upholstered pieces)

TIMBER & MATERIAL LEGALITY
Verification that timber and other materials are legally sourced and not subject to import restrictions.

  • CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) — we do not use CITES-listed species; we provide documentation confirming this on request
  • EUTR / UK Timber Regulation — due diligence documentation for timber legality
  • US Lacey Act — timber species declaration for US imports
  • FSC and PEFC certification availability for buyers with sustainability sourcing requirements
OUR COMPLIANCE APPROACH
UPFRONT SPECIFICATION REVIEW
Before production begins, we review the product specification against the compliance requirements of the destination market. If there is a potential issue — a material or finish that may not meet a specific standard — we identify it and resolve it before production, not after.
APPROVED MATERIAL LISTS
We maintain approved material lists for our key markets — coatings, finishes, composite materials, and hardware — tested and confirmed against market-specific requirements. Products are specified from these approved lists wherever possible, reducing the need for individual product testing.
THIRD-PARTY TESTING
Where specific compliance testing is required or requested, we coordinate with accredited third-party testing laboratories. Tests are conducted on production samples — not pre-production material — to confirm that the finished product meets the required standard.

Testing partners include internationally accredited laboratories with certification accepted by regulatory authorities in Australia, Europe, North America, and other key markets.

DOCUMENTATION PACKAGE
Every compliant shipment is supported by a documentation package appropriate to the destination market, which may include:

  • Material composition declarations
  • Finish specification and VOC/formaldehyde test reports
  • Timber species and legality declarations
  • Structural and safety test certificates
  • FSC or PEFC chain of custody certificates (where applicable)
  • CITES non-applicability confirmation
MARKET-SPECIFIC GUIDANCE
AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND
Australian and New Zealand compliance is primarily focused on product safety (ACCC product safety standards), timber legality (ILPA — Illegal Logging Prohibition Act), and structural performance.

We are experienced in meeting Australian import requirements across all furniture categories and can provide the documentation importers need for ACCC and customs compliance.

UNITED KINGDOM & IRELAND
Post-Brexit UK compliance requirements include UKCA product marking (where applicable), timber legality documentation under the UK Timber Regulation, and flammability standards for upholstered furniture (Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations).

We support UK buyers with the specific documentation and testing required for this market.

NORTH AMERICA (USA & CANADA)
US compliance priorities are formaldehyde (CARB/TSCA Title VI), Lacey Act timber declarations, and ASTM structural standards. California Proposition 65 (Prop 65) warnings may be relevant for some products.

We are experienced in producing compliant documentation for US market entry, including CARB-compliant composite material specification and Lacey Act species declaration.

EUROPE (EU)
EU market compliance requires REACH substance compliance, EN-series structural testing for the relevant furniture category, and timber legality documentation under EUTR.
WHEN TO RAISE COMPLIANCE EARLY
Compliance is most cost-effective when addressed at the design and specification stage. Retrofitting a compliant finish or material after a product has been sampled or produced adds cost and delay.

We recommend raising compliance requirements at first briefing — before sampling begins. Our team will confirm the required specifications upfront, and the production process is structured accordingly.

DISCUSS COMPLIANCE FOR YOUR MARKET

Tell us your destination market and product type. We’ll confirm the relevant compliance requirements, what testing or documentation is needed, and how we integrate this into your production timeline.

We treat compliance as standard practice — not an add-on, and not the buyer’s problem to solve alone.
