TEAK: THE GOLD STANDARD IN FINE FURNITURE
Living Ikon has worked with Teak throughout our 25+ years in Vietnam — in indoor furniture, transitional indoor/outdoor applications, and high-value custom pieces. We know how to source it responsibly, work with it expertly, and finish it to the standard the market expects.
Fresh-cut Teak presents as a warm golden brown with subtle greenish or yellowish tones. As it ages and oxidises — particularly when oiled and maintained — it deepens to a rich, honey-amber. Left untreated outdoors, Teak silvers gracefully to a distinguished grey. For indoor furniture, the warm, finished colour is the commercial hero.
Straight to slightly wavy with a coarse texture and distinctive, slightly oily surface feel. Teak has a characteristic lustre that distinguishes it visually from almost every other timber. Ring and ray patterns are visible but not dominant.
This is Teak’s defining property. High natural silica and oil content make it naturally resistant to moisture, insects, rot, and warping — properties that originally made it the timber of choice for shipbuilding and outdoor structures, and that translate directly into furniture longevity.
Extremely hard and dense. Teak furniture is genuinely heirloom grade — it doesn’t dent, it doesn’t warp, and with proper care, it lasts generations. This is the core of its consumer appeal and premium pricing justification.
Teak’s silica content blunts tools more quickly than other species — it requires sharp, quality tooling and experienced hands. Our factory partners work with Teak regularly and have the equipment and expertise to produce clean, precise results.
Teak is most commonly and appropriately finished with natural oil — a finish that feeds the timber, enhances its natural colour, and protects the surface while allowing it to breathe. Lacquer finishes are used in some indoor applications.
- Teak oil (traditional and commercially preferred; communicates premium care)
- Natural lacquer (for a cleaner, more contemporary finish)
- Lightly brushed or sanded raw finish (for a more relaxed, raw-luxury aesthetic)
Heavy staining is rarely appropriate — Teak’s natural beauty is the product’s primary selling point.
Teak is used in premium indoor furniture, transitional pieces, and select outdoor-adjacent applications:
- Dining tables and extension tables (a prestige application)
- Outdoor dining and occasional furniture (weather-resistant without treatment)
- Bed frames and bedroom storage
- Benches and console tables
- Decorative accessories and finishing pieces
For buyers building premium ranges — or seeking a flagship specification within a broader collection — Teak delivers the credentials to justify premium positioning at retail.
Export markets with strong Teak appetite include Australia, the UK, and North America — markets with consumer awareness of the species and willingness to pay for it.
Plantation Teak (Tectona grandis grown in managed forests) is our primary source — sustainable, legal, and increasingly the market standard. We do not source from old-growth or uncertified origins.
Documentation on Teak provenance and certification is available on request.
