ACACIA: CHARACTER, WARMTH, AND COMMERCIAL STRENGTH

Acacia is one of Southeast Asia’s most commercially valuable furniture timbers — and one of Living Ikon’s most frequently specified species. Its rich, varied colour palette, pronounced natural grain, and excellent hardness make it a compelling choice for buyers seeking distinctive, high-value product at a competitive manufacturing cost.

Grown abundantly in Vietnam and across the region, Acacia is both locally available and responsibly managed — a practical advantage for buyers with sustainability requirements or supply chain transparency goals.

CHARACTERISTICS
Colour
Acacia’s colour range is one of its most distinctive qualities. Heartwood varies from golden honey and warm amber to deep chocolate brown — often within the same piece, creating naturally varied, characterful surfaces. Sapwood is typically pale cream or light yellow, frequently incorporated for its visual contrast.

This natural variation gives Acacia furniture an organic, handcrafted feel that reads as premium in the right market context.

Grain
Bold and irregular, with pronounced figure, knots, and interlocking grain patterns. Acacia does not present as a uniform, quiet timber — it has character. This makes it particularly well-suited to designs that celebrate natural material rather than minimise it.
Hardness & Durability
Acacia is very hard and dense — comparable to Oak in structural performance. It resists wear, denting, and daily use well, making it suitable for dining and high-use furniture applications.
Workability
Acacia’s interlocking grain can present challenges in machining compared to straighter-grained species, but with the right tooling and expertise — which our factory network provides — it produces excellent results. It takes natural oil and lacquer finishes particularly well.
Weight
Heavy. Acacia furniture has substantial, quality weight.
FINISH OPTIONS

Acacia’s natural colour variation and open grain suit a range of finishing approaches:

  • Natural and clear oil (the most popular finish — enhances colour contrast and showcases grain)
  • Light lacquer (protects while preserving natural appearance)
  • Honey and amber stains (accentuates the warm, golden tones)
  • Dark walnut stains (deepens the colour for premium positioning)
  • Wire brushing (adds texture and emphasises grain depth)

We advise against heavy uniform staining on Acacia where the goal is to suppress natural variation — the timber’s character is a selling point, not a flaw.

APPLICATIONS

Acacia is widely used in our product range in:

  • Dining tables and extensions (a particularly strong match — durable, characterful surfaces)
  • Benches and side tables
  • Console and hall tables
  • Decorative occasional pieces
  • Bowls, trays, and tabletop accessories (where Acacia’s small-scale figure is highly effective)
  • Outdoor-adjacent pieces in protected settings (Acacia has natural oil content that aids durability)
MARKET POSITIONING
Acacia positions well at mid-to-upper retail price points, particularly for buyers whose market values natural materials, sustainability narratives, and handcrafted aesthetics. The visible grain character and colour variation communicate natural quality to consumers in a way that uniform or engineered materials cannot replicate.

Strong demand markets include Australia, New Zealand, and the UK — markets with strong appetite for natural timber furniture with provenance.

SUSTAINABILITY
Acacia is abundantly grown in Vietnam, often as a plantation species — meaning supply is managed, traceable, and not dependent on old-growth or endangered forest. Living Ikon sources Acacia through verified supply chains and can provide origin documentation on request.

For buyers with FSC or equivalent requirements, certified Acacia is available.
